Hidden below the Kansas City Metropolitan is an extensive network of both long-abandoned and recently redeveloped limestone mines spanning millions of square feet. Originally excavated in the late 1800s to bolster Kansas City’s construction boom, large portions of the retired caves have been converted into modern office and cold storage space. Nonetheless, substantial sections of mine remain too unstable for commercial redevelopment. BHC RHODES was selected to provide surveying services in support of ongoing backfilling operations at select areas of the Inland Quarry in Wyandotte County. Our team successfully navigated the underground, analyzed structural integrity, and established strategic borehole locations for the injection of fly ash.
