The first Panda Inn was opened in 1973 in Pasadena, CA. Following the success of the restaurant, the first Panda Express was opened in 1983. Today, Panda Express has more than 1,600 stores in 47 states. BHC was selected by Klover Architects to provide surveying, site and civil engineering design, and landscape architecture for Panda Express restaurants across the nation. BHC provided the overall landscape plan and “art corner” amenity area planting, with coordination on site furnishings and lighting. The plan was sensitive to existing street and parking lot trees, infilling where needed. Site plantings emphasized low-maintenance qualities and the ability to succeed in restrictive conditions, such as planting space between the driveway paving and retaining walls. The art amenity plantings emphasized Panda’s thematic colors of red and gold, which hugged the mini-plaza, seating, and sculpture.
