Transforming Space to Place

image description

It’s finally April, which means we’re celebrating Landscape Architecture Month! Landscape architecture is the design and planning of exterior environments that integrates nature, people, and infrastructure. It’s not just about plants but about creating functional, aesthetic, and sustainable spaces that enhance human experiences.

We turn space to place. What does this look like? We’ve got the perfect example.

Outside our office there are two small benches overlooking a pond, but nobody uses them. So how would we improve this for the 450 daily visitors to the Darth Vader building? Find out below!

As you see, it’s not just about picking out plants or designing a nice backyard. In reality, landscape architecture is much bigger than that – it shapes the parks we relax in, the streets we walk on, and even the way cities handle excessive rainwater.

Our landscape architecture team has the skills and experience to deliver exceptional projects to you, creating places that are as practical as they are poetic. All with ‘No Problem’ service.

Why did you get into Landscape Architecture?
In high school, I was looking for a career path that suited my passions/strengths. Found landscape architecture by literally googling it. I loved it for it’s incorporation of art, science, planning, and natural environment.

What is your favorite BHC LA project?
I love what we did for the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, KS. It was created to be a local community improvement and also a regional hub resource. The client didn’t want “just another hospital,” they wanted a facility that provided care extending beyond typical hospitals. This open-mindedness let our team explore ideas on ways to improve the health of daily visitors to the hospital. We gave them a solution that was community-focused. Outdoor spaces for patients, employees, doctors, surgeons, visitors – everyone – to be able to enjoy and help improve overall health.

Why did you get into Landscape Architecture?
I chose to pursue a degree in landscape architecture because I have a profound interest in the environment, I enjoy creating a poetry of space, and I love working with and for people. I am especially interested in how circulation and user experience are affected by chosen materials. Trees are my first love in life, followed by people and then dogs.

What is your favorite BHC LA project?
AC Marriott – Overland Park is a new hotel development in Overland Park, Kansas. I really enjoyed this project because I had the opportunity to coordinate side by side with civil as we developed the site. We were tasked with locating and disguising a fire lane, developing a layout that paid respect both to building and location, and designing intermittent spaces for people to enjoy while moving between different hotel programs. My favorite part was coordinating the design of a small outdoor area that provided ample shade, seating, and respite. I feel like this project has proper proportion and design and that’s why it’s currently my favorite project.
