The City needed the College-and-Metcalf corridor to do more than move cars. It had to keep traffic flowing while making room for safer, more connected walking and biking, plus a public realm that felt like a place, not just a pass-through. Through MARC’s Planning Sustainable Places Program, the City pursued a walkability-focused mobility study for the area generally bounded by I-435 on the north, 119th Street on the south, Nall Avenue on the east, and Metcalf Avenue on the west. BHC was selected as a subconsultant to the winning team, helping shape priorities such as a clear hierarchy of streets and paths for all modes, safer and more inviting pedestrian and bicycle connections, corridor wayfinding for drivers and walkers, and amenities that support a vibrant streetscape. Based on the study’s recommendations, BHC was subsequently selected as the lead consultant to design public improvements that will help bring that vision to the ground.
