The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) completed an 11.6-mile resurfacing project on I-35 in Coffey County, beginning at the Lyon-Coffey County line and continuing northeast to end south of the U.S. 75 junction. The project required 58,000 tons of asphalt, 278,700 FT of pavement striping, and 1,000 tons of edge rock. Project also included an additional 2,400 tons of asphalt for shoulder repair, due to existing asphalt base failures. Coordination between the day and night crews to manage testing, pay items, and shift quantities posed quite the challenge. The project began in KDOT CMS and was completed in KDOT AASHTOWare, requiring the estimation of quantities and management of stored materials during the change in systems. Mill and overlay asphalt operations took place 24 hours a day, 6 days a week.
